Do I get iPhone 4 on Verizon or AT&T?

June 6, 2011 2 comments

Ah that is the question if you’re in the U.S.

The main difference is that AT&T is UMTS while Verizon is CDMA.  So here is what this means in practical terms:

  1. More dropped calls with AT&T (Verizon does better at soft switching which is when you’re transferred between cell towers)
  2. AT&T’s 3G network is supposedly faster than Verizon’s
  3. On AT&T you can talk and surf simultaneously while you can’t do that on Verizon’s
  4. AT&T’s has a SIM card and Verizon’s doesn’t – so I don’t think you can use another carrier with Verizon’s phone
  5. AT&T’s will probably work in more countries

Having said all that, read this review http://reviews.cnet.com/2722-6452_7-1069.html

In that cnet review they say it’s a close call but give the winnings to Verizon for its superior call quality

So if not dropping calls is really really important then I would lean towards Verizon.  If you don’t mind a dropped call or two now and then, but want faster data speeds, and the ability to surf and speak, and worldwide usage, go with AT&T.

Oh and by the way, the new iTunes in the cloud service, launched today in beta, is only available on the GSM version of the iPhone 4 (sorry Verizon).
